Shoot 2 Edits

I tried to edit these photos in the style of of Kyle Thompson making the images feel warm to go along with the fire. One thing I would like to try in my next shoot is to try and create silhouettes of people infront of fire. I like these images the most because the fire looks really good in these images and I think my editing skills have improved greatly at trying to subtley edit images. One issue I've faced editing these images is that some parts of images are out of focus or people are unknowingly pulling faces in the short space of time that I took the image. Another inspiration for the shoot was Kevin Russ as I took photos in a forest relatively close to my house as I didnt know how well these images would turn out and If they were a failure I didnt want to have to travel all the way back knowing that my images weren't very good.

This was my first edited image of this shoot, when shooting this I tried to style the photo like Kyle Thompson however it was hard to try and drop pages on fire infront of my model without risking hurting him or other people. So in photoshop I opened an image of my model waiting for the pages and manually added different images of pages on fire over and around him. I believe this looks really good and even though some of the images look out of place I can work on this technique to try and master it. Other than editing in the pages I also changed the levels of the image to that it would look overall brighter.

To create this image I had to first manipulate the fire by cloning certain parts of it and using a brush tool on the fire so that it looked more dangerous than what it actually was. At first the manipulated fire look out of place so I changed levels of the image to make it brighter and fit together more, then I added two different layers of blur over it. The first layer was everything but my models face and the second was mostly the edges of the image and the fire so that the blur was more gradual than blunt. After doing this I raised the saturation of the image to make the over picture more colourful.

With this image I wanted to contast with the others and make it seems more cold and sad this is because the page hadnt been lit yet and its as if the page on fire was what added warm to the image. To make this image seem dark and cold I raised the shadows so that everything look a bit more dark and I lowered saturation so that the whole picture was a bit less colour full. One thing I would've liked in this image is to have sparks coming off the ligher as a small bit of light.

To create this image I tried manipulating the fire so again it looked more full and dangerous that what it was at the time. I did this by using the clone stamp tool again and drawing extra fire on from different parts of the image. I think this slightly works well but if youre told its manipulated you could easily tell, but if you dont know that the fires been edited then it just looks as if the fire just quickly burst up and the page on the stick was burning quickly. After adding to the fire I turned up the saturation so the image would be more colourful.

With this image I wanted to draw emphasis onto the sparks coming off the lighter. I did this by adjusting the levels in the image to make the shadows darker but also the bright colours of the lighter more noticable. Im really happy with this photo because I didnt go out of my way to capture the sparks it was just a lucky accident. I also like the face that the stick and sparks are the most in focus rather than the background.

I wanted to make the fire the focal point of this image so I changed, the leves so that the fire would be really bright and colourful. With any of the images of the fire I would like the fire to be the focal point as to me it sums up living with nature and surviving in the woods. Everything depends on it.

With this image I wanted to make it look as warm as possible without potentially ruining the image. I tried to edit it in the style of Kyle Thompson with his image of a shilloette and fire. I got really lucky with this image with how the fire move on Nathans face. I also like how you can see the book page buringin well and you can see through the fire at the model.

I tried to edit this image in the style of Idris Khan by overaying the image as much as possible and making the layers transparent enough to make it subtle. I only overlayed this image 3 times because I didnt want the image to look to extreme or overdone. I also added a blue tint over the image just to make it a bit different from my other images.

Again with this image I wanted to manipulate the image loosely based on Irdis Khan. Again I only over layed the image 3 times but I believe this one has worked better than the other one as with this image you can tell it has been overlayered rather than the other image that just looks out of focus and blury.

I wanted to experiment with images just like May Xiong by placing lines over the image to show the mind working and the thought process that goes on in someone mind. This image shows Brandon trying to light the paper so the lines go from his mind to his and and onto the stick.

This is another image styled like May Xiong showing my models thought process going back and forth between the fire and his won personal saftey. I enjoy editing like this because its something different and I think it does work really well with what im doing. I would like to edit like this for my final shoot.

After place down the lines I try and adjust the levels so that they fit in better and you can see them more easily. I styled this one as if my model is day dreaming so you see all the lines moving off into the distance. Its as if his body is here but his mind is somewhere else.

With this image I wanted to try and create a diamond shape around my models face while connecting it to the fire. This edit turn out better than I thought it would because it actually created a diamond and looks really good. I would use this technique again but maybe try and recreate it using actualy string after printing the photo off.

I wanted to edit this image in the style of Caitlin Molton and I wanted to try and simulate as if this image has been taken of a black and white film camera. The trick with editing like this is having a gradual blur coming across the image and having a slightly blunt black and white filter on the image. I like these sets of images but I dont think they fit in with woodland.

This is another image in the style of Caitlin Molton but this time I used an image where my model was in focus looking at the camera. I think this photo looks really good because the black and white is very blunt my only issue is that you can see the blur line if you look close enough.

I wanted to edit a photo mainly focusing on an actual fire. I had one photo like this and I had to crop it down so that the fire would be the main focus of the image. I also tried my hardest to edit the image so the background would look like the image was took at night and the fire was the only light sorce. One minor issue I had with this was because of my editing one of the models hands in the background looks unnaturally pink but thats only a minor issue.

Im really proud of this image because it looks good and the overlaying has went really well. To create this image I used a photo of a landscape I took and then I turned it on its side and overlayed a portrait image from my second shoot. I would deffinately like to try and edit more images like this in my newer shoots when I can get to a landscape with more trees.
